Girls Impartial Want to Have Fun is an 80’s classic, representing the time and culture perfectly. If you want to know what it is like try thinking of an 80’s version of Center Stage and mixing it with Dirty Dancing. But as always in the 80’s the parents rep in the contrivance and she has to sneak out in order to practice with her elected dance partner Jeff Malene(Lee Montgomery) . As romance blossoms so does jealousy for a spoilt brat Natalie Sands(Holly Gagnier) as she tries her hardest to crash the two up, to collect the guy and the contest, by getting Janey into peril with her strict folks! Girls Objective Want to Have Fun tells the epic of a girl whose dream is to dance on her popular dance TV reveal. Then she finally gets the chance in a dance contest! But before she can dance on the prove, she has to learn to find along with her partner, beat out the snobby girl and HER partner who are also in the competition, convince her dad that being on the reveal is grand for her, and improve her dance skills.

I idea this movie had spacious dance scenes, and colossal actors! I plan Sarah Jessica Parker was amazing! Although I’m not satisfied with the movies she’s in today, I loved her in this movie!

The Madagascar 2 movie is a titanic flick, burly of fun and witty lines. If you liked the first movie, this is more of the same, if not better and probably superior of five stars. The second DVD featuring two Slash Penguin shorts for a total of about 25 minutes of video, isn’t worth the additional cost, in my concept. The first Madagascar release had a Penguin animation short included as an extra on the movie disc, whereas the novel one has two shorts and charges the buyer for the priviledge. And frankly, I view that the two penguin cartoons, while a bit comical, were a bit of a disappointment. If one is a Accurate fan of the Crop Penguins, then you’ll need to obtain this DVD station. Otherwise, I would recommend unbiased getting the main feature and effect yourself the $7.

Dreamworks’ intelligent films have not been able to occupy a candle to caliber of Disney/Pixar films, but let’s face it: who can? That said, Madagascar 2 is learning from Pixar at the very least. Racy films work when they are able to successfully blend humor, heart, and a superb myth to retain the audience sustained for at least 90 minutes.

Madagascar 2 starts in the apt direction by presenting a very nice opening featuring a brief origin of Alex and how he got to Unusual York. It’s probably less than 5 minutes, but already station the tone for the heart of the portray, which focuses chiefly on Alex fitting in with his fellow lions. The other chief characters are also stumbling as they interact with their hold in Africa.

Also benefit is the humor. I sometimes feel like the movies would be funnier if the penguins had more veil time, but they are quiet comic in whatever scenes they’re in. The granny who beat up Alex in the first film is also assist for some humor. The humor is better and more consistent than the first.

The only flaw in the film is that it is fairly predictable. The chracters are a runt bit better here than in the first and it has a reliable heart, but sometimes they don’t exhaust as long on the emotional aspect as they could. It’s unexcited safe entertainment and I like to survey Dreamworks progress with their films.

Friends had warned me that worthy of the first fragment of this film was listless and they had made the same observation of Angela’s Ashes. I disagree with them about both. In Cinderella Man (a phrase attributed to Damon Runyon), it is imperative that James Braddock’s circumstances and those of his family are carefully, unhurriedly established to beget an appropriate context for the process by which he resumed his career as a professional fighter in 1934 and then faced Max Baer on June 13th, 1935, in Long Island City, N.Y. Although a 10-1 underdog, Braddock won the heavyweight championship of the world. (The film takes us to this point.) He would lose his heavyweight title two years later in an 8 round KO to Joe Louis, “The Brown Bomber.” Braddock retired after a final get over Tommy Farr in 1938.

Other reviewers have shared their occupy reasons for thinking so highly of this film. Here are mine. First, perhaps only in Raging Bull is the physicality of boxing so compellingly portrayed. Also, I worship the skills of those who recreated a period more than 70 years ago, one during which the Braddocks and millions of others struggled to overcome hunger and illness as well as poverty and especially horror and humiliation. Under Ron Howard’s direction, the quality of acting is outstanding, notably Paul Giamatti as Braddock’s manager and trainer, Joe Gould. (I smooth assume that Giamatti should have at least been nominated for an Academy Award in recognition of his performance as Miles Raymond in Sideways.) With regard to Renée Zellweger (as Braddock’s wife Mae) and Craig Bierko (as Max Baer) as well as Paddy Considine, Bruce McGill, Ron Canada, David Huband, Linda Kash, and Nicholas Campbell, they had to work within quite specific limitations in their supporting roles. I concept they were all honest glowing.

Finally, I wish to single out Russell Crowe for special praise. Whatever his public persona may be, he demonstrates exceptional self-discipline as well as nuanced talent in the lead role of the plucky heavyweight champion boxer. Braddock fought for “milk,” to be obvious, but in doing so became a symbol of hope for other victims of the Substantial Depression. Crowe brilliantly portrays Braddock’s fundamental decency and integrity as well as his total devotion to the welfare of his wife and their three children. To me, this is Crowe’s finest performance thus far.

“Cinderella Man”, Ron Howard’s heart-felt film biography of boxing anecdote James J. Braddock, never received the recognition it deserved when first released, due, in expansive fraction, to Russell Crowe’s awful press following a telephone-throwing incident. Overzealous critics tended to lump the incident and film together, and despite Crowe’s public apology, many moviegoers skipped it. Now that the film is available on DVD, it’s time to answer the film for what it always HAS been; director Howard and star Crowe’s FINEST film, together!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Cinderella Man! Click Here

Braddock’s narrative is so astounding and inspirational, that it is wonderful that it’s taken seventy years to mumble it. Sylvester Stallone ‘borrowed’ from it, extensively, in creating “Rocky”, and in viewing the film, the parallels between fact and fiction are obvious; Braddock had been an ‘up and comer’ in the twenties, but broken bones and ill-advised matches had cost him a championship shot. Then the Depression struck, Braddock was wiped out, financially, and he struggled to relieve his wife and family through the most harrowing period in American history. Considered ‘washed up’ and too faded for a comeback, all the boxer had going for him was his wife’s worship, his manager’s faith, and his personal integrity, which refused to allow him to give up. He tenaciously climbed benefit up the ranks of younger title contenders, earning the adoration of a country trying to rebuild their gain lives, as well, until, finally, he had his championship match, against ruthless ‘killing machine’ Max Baer. Their match would become the stuff of legends!

To director Howard’s credit, he never ‘over-sentimentalizes’ the yarn, or tries to turn it into a soft-focus ‘fairy tale’. His vision of the Depression is the most factual and heartbreaking since the documentaries of the ’30s, and will arrive as a revelation to those whose only knowledge of the period is a paragraph in a history book. Jim Braddock is not a ‘Superman’, but a hard-working, decent man with no higher vision than to provide his family a better life, and as magnificently portrayed by Crowe, he embodies qualities of honesty and dignity that many of us dream of, but seldom finish. In any other year, he’d be a shoo-in for an Oscar for his performance, it’s that worthy!

Matching Crowe’s portrayal are Renée Zellweger, as his exact wife, Mae, who perfectly channels a ’30s ’style’, as well as a gutsiness that is timeless, and the unbelievable Paul Giamatti, as manager Joe Gould, who would sell everything he owned, rather than study Braddock give up. Giamatti, a extinct character actor who finally saw his ‘breakthrough’ in last year’s “Sideways”, should finally collect his long-deserved Oscar, for this role.

“Cinderella Man” is a film that will continue to be cherished long after the filmmakers are gone, a yarn rooted in an earlier era, but peaceful timeless.

Movies objective don’t accumulate better than this!

Dinosaurs are everyone’s accepted fossils. All kids seem to know about them in one contrivance or another. There’s “Jurassic Park” and other movies. There’s Barney. All major natural history museums have exhibits. Dinosaurs are many states’ “official fossil” and on and on. Well, why not? Even though they constitute only a runt fraction of the total Mesozoic fauna, they’re generally mountainous and spectacular and grab the imagination like no other fossil group. The Mesozoic Era was a fair time for the reptiles and not unbiased the Dinosaurs. The Mesozoic oceans had an assemblage of sizable marine reptiles that were honest as great in their habitats as the Dinosaurs were on land. Giant marine turtles, Ichthyosaurs, Plesiosaurs of grand variety and ferocious Mosasaurs, in addition to some splendid expansive sharks and other fish, roamed the Mesozoic seaways. “Sea Monsters: A prehistoric Adventure” is a film assign together to depict the marine fauna of this time span.

“Sea Monsters” weaves multiple lines of information together. First, there’s the group of paleontologists who are collecting and curateing the fossils. Second are the nature and arresting recreations of the fossils themselves. Third is a minute tale that the fossils supposedly squawk regarding some exiguous short-necked plesiosaurs referred to as dollies (a mother and two siblings) who venture out into the mean Cretaceous sea about 82 million years ago. Finally, the movie gives an keen and spectacular viewing of the geologic history of the seaway, both in arrangement and perspective views. Would the average viewer (especially kids) comprehend and enjoy the complexly interwoven chronicle? Probably not. However, they well might bask in many facets of the film especially some spectacular inviting versions of the Mesozoic marine creatures. A person well versed in natural history might notion the film in an entirely different scheme and catch it to be very absorbing and well done. The DVD could be repeatedly viewed, especially by children. As their knowledge grew, probably their notion and appreciation would also grow. Same for adults. The film has top-notch educational potential. Personally, my popular allotment of the film would be the animations. It was savory to notion creatures that I’ve read about in spectacular live versions.

I should probably announce a disclosure at this point. I served as a scientific consultant to this film and I’m listed in the closing credits. I received no remuneration or expenses and have no financial tie-ins with the filming company or The National Geographic Society, and none was expected. My interest was in the fossils and the chronicle they were telling and I’m ecstatic with the final results. I viewed the film at the Rueben Quickly IMAX Theater with Director Sean Phillips and others and greatly enjoyed the evening. The DVD could not possibly be as spectacular as my viewing, but I have tubby confidence that the DVD version will display well on a wide-screen TV.

Gary Peterson

The special effects were incredible, a lot of information was given, improbable narration, and the storyline was sharp.

However, I can’t bring myself to give more than three stars because the staged paleontologist scenes were too cheesy for me…I don’t know if better actors would have made a inequity. Objective when we were getting into the scenes with the prehistoric creatures, it would nick away to a reacreation of how the fossils were found – it was very distracting.

I mediate maybe they should have separated those scenes from the main storyline, and offered the fossil information as a special feature for the DVD.

If you bewitch the set-up of DVDs such as Chased By Sea Monsters or When Dinosaurs Roamed America, you might have the same predicament trying to sit through this DVD.

We bought this DVd for our three-year musty son who is fascinated with prehistoric sea monsters…he loves the parts featuring the creatures, but kept wandering off whenever they slash to the staged “people” scenes. That kind of defeated the purpose of buying this DVD.

The original MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN by Jean Craighead-George is outstanding. The 1969 movie based on the book is not nearly as a top-notch. The movie strays away from the yarn entirely too great. I really don’t eye the reason why the movie does this either. The fresh would have made the perfect screenplay. The worst change of all is the death of Sam Gribley’s falcon, Horrible, by a hunter in the middle of the film. Another expansive change is the addition of a pet raccoon named Gus, which also was not in the book. The ending was a yet another disappointing change. There were at least 25 other differences that I spotted between the book and the movie too.

As a teacher I smooth spend this movie after my students have read the modern. However, I exhaust it to display my point that the unique is usually better then the movie. I also have my students try to obtain as many differences between the two as they can.

I judge that an updated version of this movie, that follows the writing of Jean Craighead-George, would be tall a grand hit today.

If you never read the original then the movie is fairly favorable. It does remind you of the obsolete Sunday night Disney movie that employ to be on television. If you have read the book, then it is disappointing.

As a fifth grade teacher who shows this movie to my class AFTER they read the fresh, I procure that they lift the book. Why? There is more detail in the book, and they don’t be pleased the unrealistic scene with Gruesome in the middle. However, the movie does relieve a principal purpose, which is why I present it each year. We accumulate to meet the majestic Unpleasant, hear her shrill roar, be pleased her soaring beauty. It’s also though-provoking to search for the inside of Sam’s tree, and to have a genuine face assign to Bando. But, for the honest experience, the book by Jean Craighead George MUST be read!!

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT’s rocky history is well known. Loved by critics and its fans, it fought to accumulate an audience, and its final season was a short affair. However, the roam from the shows premier (included uncensored and expanded along with the aired version) to its conclusion (and, YES, it has a conclusion) is hilarious and worth many returns. There are so many jokes and resonating gags that multiple viewings are REQUIRED, but your first visit to the world of the base Bluth family will be a reward for odd viewers.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Arrested Development – The Complete Series! Click Here

Here are three seasons of laughs. The series begins with the arrest of the Bluth patriarch and continues as the clan’s only responsible member, Michael (portrayed by Jason Bateman), tries to preserve the family’s business afloat while his mother, siblings, and other family members selfishly grab for every freebie and dollar. His mother, Lucille, is a chilly, controlling alcoholic whose loyalty to her family keeps her one step from pure villainy. His siblings include an older brother, Gob, a magician (of shrimp skill), a younger brother, Buster, a mama’s boy who eventually loses a body piece to a tainted seal, and a sister whose marriage is … complicated. Throw in a long-suffering son infatuated with his cousin and an uncle who is the twin of his father, and you can stare how complicated Michael’s life becomes.

Not your average family, not your average TV comedy (this is NOT a sitcom performed live in front of a studio audience but is filmed more like a documentary with the camera floating around like an unseen voyeur — reflect the frail comedy series SOAP updated a la THE OFFICE) . The jokes arrive speedily and indignant. It’s all absurd and incredibly though-provoking.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Arrested Development – The Complete Series! Click Here

For the relate, the series is presented widescreen, and there are deleted scenes and audio commentaries for selected episodes. To protest you the truth, I haven’t even skimmed these extras, but I have watched the series in its entirety far too many times to content without embarrassing myself. It’s too abominable that ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT didn’t accomplish the ratings essential to preserve it afloat, but it has more laughs than comedies that lasted twice as long.

I arrived tedious to this dance. I don’t really have any structure to my TV viewing, other than Sunday nights on HBO. Despite reading sure reviews and hearing accolades for this explain I missed the entire broadcast season. What that means to me is that I’ve unprejudiced immersed myself in probably the funniest 22 episodes of broadcast comedy ever (that includes Seinfeld and the old-fashioned Dick Van Dyke reveal) . This first season is chock stout of running gags, absurd situations and some of the funniest deadpan dialog deliveries ever recorded on video. It’s impossible to single out a cast member because they all form notable contributions, even the guys who slouch on for a line or two. Watching them in sequence does have some continuity of memoir but you’ll secure yourself returning to some special favorites. The bring your daughter to work episode brings out the absurdity of the whole practice while delivering some of the best laughs of the whole series. Select THIS!!!

For me, “Care For and Death” bridges together the slapstick satire of Woody’s early movies with the colossal verbal wit of the later movies. It never falls into the trap of relying too considerable on the broken-down, and its reliance on the latter produces some of the silliest Woody dialogue I’ve ever heard. But it’s the perfect mixture between the two that makes this my bewitch for funniest Woody Allen flick. So far.

I’ve always felt that the context (Russia in the 19th century and the Napoleonic Wars) and the whisper (pre-existentialist philosophy) were elegant targets to satire. The opening scenes, where Woody as narrator introduces his screwball family, are truly looney-tuney. And the scenes where Woody (Boris) and Diane Keaton (Sonja) talk philosophy, befriend more to acquire fun of the ridiculous gibberish they are engaged in than to further the philosophical discourse. The truer philosophical discussions approach in the accomplish of setup-punchline jokes delivered later on (“If it turns out that there IS a God, I don’t judge that he’s evil; I reflect that the worst you can say about him is that basically he’s an underachiever”) . This is all agreeable stuff.

Woody’s performance here reminded me a lot of really valid Groucho Marx. His wiseguy retorts to oblivious inquisitors are done in the same winking/nod to the camera manner that Groucho mined for gold. And Woody, with his messy red hair and horn-rimmed glasses, looks every bit the sarcastic clown that Groucho did. There’s one particular scene (“She’s a ample kidder… No, you’re a titanic kidder… No, you’re Don Francisco’s sister”) which mimics the Marx Brothers doubletalk style perfectly. In the film’s second half, Woody takes a step benefit, to allow Diane Keaton some astronomical time in the Groucho persona. And she runs with it. Keaton is an underrated laughable actress, usually overshadowed by Woody. Here, she rolls her eyes, grins goofily, has enormous silly timing, and appears to be having a gloriously satisfactory time delivering her dialogue. You can gawk Woody’s pride as he stands to the side and watches her go substantial guns.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Love and Death! Click Here

There are many truly hilarious scenes here (my favourite: Woody, drawn into a duel, is offered to settle his weapon from a pair of guns; he picks them both up, examines them for a moment, and then says “I’ll pick these”), the scenery is shot gorgeously, the music by Prokofiev is ecstatic and fits in perfectly with the film, and there is never a down moment. Advance to reflect of it, the journey reminds me of the joke-a-minute style “pioneered” by the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker “Airplane” movies. Only Woody, dear Woody, bestows such intelligence and wit upon the material that it is elevated to a divine situation.

Over the years, this is one of the Allen films that I most often revisit. It truly gets better the more times it is seen. The dialog is shining. The interplay between Allen and Keaton is perfect. I also reflect it is Diane Keaton’s best role as she has the opportunity to spend her amazing humorous touch and timing. Each scene contains lines that have become classics: Allen; “I heard voices”. Keaton: “I was praying”. Allen: I heard two voices”. Keaton: “I do both parts”. The dialog is layered and the Russian literature references are very droll. This is a film esteem and certainly ranks with the broad comedies of all time.

Search for the Truth

Amos Lassen

Buy,Download, Or Stream Constantine’s Sword! Click Here

“Constantine’s Sword (First Accelerate Features), based on the bestseller by James Carroll, is a search for the truth that comes face-to-face with persecution and violence in the name of G-d not only in the past but at indicate as well. The film, directed by Oren Jacoby, examines the legacy that has been passed from generation to generation beginning with the Emperor Constantine and extending to fresh day religious fanaticism.

The film plays like a detective record. We follow Carroll as he goes into his maintain past and into the larger world where he finds Christian church violence against non-Christians. We go to the Air Force Academy where we scrutinize evangelicals trying to score converts within the armed forces of America and we watch how religious influence can bring about serious consequences on American foreign policy. We are then faced with the put a question to of whether it is fanaticism fueled by religious fervor that threatens the recent world.

The title, “Constantine’s Sword” refers to the Christian faulty which caused the Emperor Constantine to roar “in this stamp you will conquer” thereby making the sinful a symbol of war rather than a symbol of fancy and peace.

The film looks at the history of Christianity as a trend that caused oppression which led to the most substandard crime of all, the Holocaust. It also looks at the demonstrate day and concentrates on the family of Mickey Weinstein and how it challenges the evangelicalism of the Air Force Academy.

This is perhaps the most brilliant documentary I have ever seen and it mesmerized me completely. It exposes religion as an underlying and unhealthy trend in the current world and compares the religious fervor of today with the Crusades when so many were slaughtered in the name of G-d. This is a film that will lope and appall you. Hopefully it will also cause you to inquire yourself in order to live a better and more just life.

“Constantine’s Sword,” the movie version of John Carroll’s book, is now available on DVD; it can also be watched on-line if you have Netflix.

There’s a spacious deal of autobiography in the film. Carroll’s father, Joseph Carroll was an significant Air Force general; an FBI agent, Joseph Carroll was then sent to the current Air Force, commissioned a colonel, and within two years was a major general. He was the founding director of the Air Force’s Office of Special Investigations, and then the founding director of the Defense Intelligence Agency; it was he who brought the photos of Russian missles in Cuba to Kennedy’s attention.

The younger Carroll grew up on military bases, met John XXIII with his family as a teenager, and in the wake of the nuclear uncertainty of the Frosty War, opted to pursue those things that would last. His first mass was famous at a chapel on an Air Force base; growing disillusioned with the war in Vietnam, and feeling called to follow the Prince of Peace, he slipped in unbiased a slight allusion in that first homily. He preached on Ezekiel’s vision of the dry bones; he mentioned they had been burned by the sun. More than that, burned by napalm. Such a cramped rebellion-such a miniscule insult to the military-but enough to drive a wedge between James and Joseph.

Carroll was a priest from 1969-1974, increasingly active in opposing the war, which destroyed his faith in both governmental and churchly authority. In an interview from those days he notes the silence of the US Catholic hierarchy to the bombing of civilians in Vietnam and opines, “Were US bombers dropping contraceptives on the Vietnamese, the American Catholic hierarchy would have condemned it quickly; but we were dropping napalm, and they said nothing.”

These personal stories are sketched throughout the movie, which begins at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, and the snarl of aggressive evangelization of non-Christians, especially Jewish students, by evangelical churches in the dwelling and by evangelical faculty, staff and students of the Academy. He interviews Academy graduate Mikey Weinstein, who was frightened when one of his two sons then at the Academy told him of anti-Jewish slurs he had been subjected to, and of the aggressive promotion of “The Passion of the Christ” by the Academy.

Carroll uses this incident to initiate into a discussion of two issues: the history of Christian hostility to Jews, and of the linkage of Christianity with military power. He visits Milvian Bridge outside Rome, and Constantine’s vision of a outrageous with the motto, “In hoc signo vinces,” becomes the guiding metaphor for the book-”Imperfect and sword become one. Christianity turns violent.”

He surveys how this baptized violence spread across Europe, and became a means to unite feuding Christian kingdoms in a war against a accepted enemy, the Muslim “infidel”-and against closer enemies, against whom Christians had a long-standing grudge.

Carroll relates how he grew up in a typical Irish-Catholic family, trusting in a holy church with holy saints, priests and bishops. Now he saw those “holy” priests and bishops calling for bloody conquest, even leading pogroms against Jews in the name of Christ.

He travels to Spain, where Jews were first forced to convert to Christianity; then, when Christians became suspicious of the integrity of those they had forcibly converted, the Spanish Inquisition was created to investigate and to punish. When Jews were expelled from Spain, many were welcome in Rome, until 1555, when chief Roman inquisitor Giovanni Cardinal Caraffa became Pope Paul IV, who restricted Jewish intercourse with Christians and created a ghetto in which they must live.

Though modern popes, especially John Paul II, have taken spacious strides to repair relations with Jews, Carroll doesn’t assume they’ve gone far enough. John Paul denounced Nazi antisemitism, but blamed it on neo-paganism, refusing to reply that another fragment of its foundation was the legacy of Christian anti-Judaism, of accusations of “Christ-killer” and the blood libel. Only this can interpret the collusion of many Catholic prelates with Nazism. He goes to Trier, where one of the supposed relics brought befriend from the Holy Land by Helena, the Robe of Christ, has been kept since the time of Constantine. The Bishop of Trier supported the National Socialists in the election of 1933, and to celebrate their victory, arranged for the Robe to be displayed. Vice Chancellor Franz von Papen represented Hitler, and, with the bishop, sent a telegram to Hitler pledging their mutual cooperation. While it was on explain, Eugenio Pacelli (later Pope Pius XII) signed the concordat with Hitler-protecting the institutional church while accepting Nazi rule. Pacelli might not have been “Hitler’s Pope,” says Carroll, but he was certainly “Hitler’s Cardinal.”

That same year Edith Stein wrote to the pope to warn of Nazi antisemitism and of the dismal future that would face Europe’s Jews; five years later, now known as Teresa Benedicta of the Tainted, she lamented in her diary that the pope had never bothered to answer … and that all she had predicted had reach suitable. This wasn’t mentioned in her canonization in 1998; she was canonized as a martyr, despite the fact that she went to Auschwitz not because of her Catholic faith, but for her Jewish blood.

In Rome, the anti-Jewish legislation of Paul IV was rescinded when Italy unified and the pope was banished to the Vatican; it was revived by Mussolini, however, and when in 1943 Mussolini rounded up the Jews of Rome to deport to Auschwitz, the pope said nothing. A survivor says in the film, “If the pope had only taken the misfortune to go outside the gate-and not say anything, impartial do as he did when Rome was bombed-just go outside the gate and stand in silence, with his arms raised in the originate of a outrageous, there might never have been a deportation. Italians and German Catholics would not have gone along with it.” But he never appeared.

Carroll affirms the strides taken forward by the Catholic Church in the latter share of the 20th century, especially the “change that mattered most” at Vatican 2, the decree, Nostra Aetate. But he wonders how grand it has sunk in. He speaks with Fr. Stanislaw Obirek, a Polish Jesuit, suspended by his order because, Carroll says, he wanted a fuller accounting for the Catholic Church’s role in Polish antisemitism.

Returning to the US, Carroll listens to the rhetoric of George Bush’s “war on horror”-language of “crusade,” “excellent vs. ghastly,” “God is not neutral”-and hears echoes of past attempts to fuse wrong and sword That’s what frightens him about what he saw happening at the Air Force Academy; it appears to be a case of religion and military power coming together, with young evangelicals in the military inspired by their religious zeal to fight Middle East enemies. This isn’t the spirit of Jesus, but the spirit of Constantine, which is quiet alive after 1700 years.

The movie can be faulted for its disparagement of Scripture (Carroll accepts uncritically whatever Elaine Pagels tells him), but it remains a much testimony to the experiences of those who have been slit by Constantine’s sword.

_The Bear_ is based on the modern _The Grizzly King_ by James Curwood (Curwood was to Canada what Zane Grey was to Utah) . But never mind the middling source material; the indispensable thing is that director Jean-Jacques Annaud has mature it as the basis of a truly wonderful film. The cinematography alone justifies the project — but it must be seen in its favorable widescreen ratio. Once the film is panned and scanned, most of the radiant British Columbia landscapes are lost, leaving viewers with a slow-paced, sentimental fable about a acquire cub they never quite glance.
But in the noble widescreen ratio, the film’s apparent flaws turn to strengths. The insensible wobble gives us time to examine characters’ relationships to the land (even as it allows the film to achieve its fill rhythm) . And the wild vastness of this land undercuts any sentimentality; it is always sure that the land is harsh, and that its dangers are proper and frightening.
By the method, this is probably the only film to depict (albeit fictionally) an animal getting high on psychedelic mushrooms. I divulge this is because bears don’t have the sense to honest say no. Or maybe it’s objective because the director is French.
Three stars, but add two more if you’re seeing this film in widescreen. The bigger the mask, the better.

Paul Newman made his directing debut with this epic and he does a immense job; whenever it threatens to bore, something always saves it. Rachel teaches by day, wearing simple, practical dresses and her hair up. By night she caters to her domineering mother by preparing refreshments for her parties. This sexually repressed spinster schoolteacher, however, gets one last chance at romance in her shrimp Connecticut town. Woodward mixes unbiased the upright amounts of loneliness and sweetness in the leading role. Won Golden Globe and Novel York Film Critics awards for both Woodward and her husband Newman for best actress and best director respectively (they took home four awards between them) .

This is a mild, insightful film that is blessed with a wise and incredible performance by Joanne Woodward. Directed by her husband, Paul Newman, this film explores the problem of a 35-year feeble woman who has approach to the crossroads of her life. She is a decent, lonely and accurate person who realizes that she must earn a major change in her life, or continue an unfulfilled and sterile existence in a runt town that offers her no chance of sincere happiness. Paul Newman really shows his skill as a director in bringing this chronicle to life. Here, Joanne Woodward proves that she is one of the finest, if not THE best, actress of her generation. She makes the viewer care about Rachel Cameron; you feel her loneliness, her despair, her fears, and finally, her hope for a better future. Woodward’s skill as an actress has always been her courage to recount unglamourous, trusty women with all their imperfections and foibles. This is a enormous performance. The ensemble supporting cast in this film is also fabulous. The sadly underappreciated Estelle Parsons gives a gutsy performance as Rachel’s equally lonely school teacher friend. Kate Harrington, as Rachel’s demanding mother, and Geraldine Fitzgerald are also aesthetic. This is a broad slice-of-life film that, in its absorb still but remarkable contrivance, tells you a lot about the human condition. Kudos to Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman!
